Take inspiration from the people behind the scenes
Most people think fashion is all about what’s on the catwalk, but the people behind the scenes are the ones making the waves these days. With the popularization of street style blogs, editors, designers, stylists, and bloggers have become the new fashion celebrities. Here are a few style standouts to take inspiration from…
Anna Dello Russo
Anna Dello Russo is the Editor at Large for Vogue Japan. ADR, as she is fondly known, is famous for wearing head to toe runway looks, sometimes just days after they make their debut. During fashion week she may change up to three times a day, and never wears the same thing twice. Recently, she has begun experimenting with hats and fascinators. Her favourite spells out ‘J’ADR’, a play on her initials and her feelings toward the fashion industry. She first came into the public’s consciousness on street style blogs such as The Sartorialist.
Karl Lagerfeld is the iconic designer of Chanel, Fendi, and his own label. He always has his hair in a perfectly groomed ponytail; sunglasses, a perfectly tailored suit, and a very high collar complete the look. You can also find him wearing fingerless leather gloves and carrying around four iPhones at once in his briefcase.
Emmanuelle Alt is the new editor of French Vogue. Alt is the embodiment of understated French girl cool. She always looks impeccable, and favours skinny trousers, high heels, loose shirts, and statement jackets. She epitomizes the Balmain rock ‘n’ roll look of recent years, which makes sense as she consults for the brand. Alt is a world away from the icy editors that still abound in fashion. To relaunch the French Vogue website she and a bevy of supermodels made a parody of WHAM’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ music video.
Susie Lau of the blog Style Bubble has a wonderfully eccentric style. She can be seen on her blog mixing prints and clashing colors in refreshingly cool ways and has a soft spot for neon accessories and anything with a flower print. Lau combines high fashion pieces with items from stores such as Topshop and Nike.
Rachel Zoe is a stylist to the stars. She has her own TV show in America and has become almost as famous as the celebrities she styles. Zoe favours oversized everything: hats, sunglasses, jewellery, furs – the bigger the better. She loves animal prints and black, and is hardly ever seen without her sky-high hells. Her personal style was so emulated that she started her own fashion line.
