James Heaney explores the Byre Theatre’s upcoming events.

'The Outside Track' will be performing at the Byre

With its minimalistic pane-glass exterior and reception with polished wooden flooring, the Byre Theatre could easily be mistaken for a boutique hotel. Tucked behind the hustle and bustle of South Street, the Byre’s stylish image and welcoming staff have ensured the venue’s continued status as Scotland’s only 5 star theatre.

What’s more, as a winner of a prestigious Creative Places Award 2012, the theatre’s calendar of events for this year is fuller than ever; packed with performances and activities to suit even the pickiest of culture vultures. So, instead of getting stressed with constant exam revision over the coming weeks, why not schedule a wind-down visit or two to this cultural gem?

For the upcoming month (May) The Tribe has three top recommendations for our fellow students:

‘Beyond the Horizon’ features the university’s highly acclaimed Dance Society, and this performance promises to be a globetrotting extravaganza, showcasing an array of dance styles including Ballet, Tap, Street and Contemporary. Running (or should that be ‘dancing’?) from 2 – 4 May, student tickets are selling fast at a bargain price of £5.

‘The Outside Track’ (main picture) will be performing their unique blend of Irish, Scottish and Canadian music in St Andrews for one night only, on Friday 11 May. The band has been amassing a staggering number of awards and is quickly becoming an international hit, having already toured successfully across Europe and the USA. Playing new music with a traditional influence, this five-piece is sure to impress with their skills on the fiddle, accordion, harp, guitar and flute. Definitely worth a watch!

The ‘Food Fair’ on Saturday 12 May is an excuse for all foodies to get excited, with free entry all day from 10am til 5pm. Promising to display the best of local produce and the chance to speak to local food producers, this is the perfect excuse to get away from studying and sample some of what St Andrews and Fife has to offer.

With the Kingarroch offering a great pre-theatre menu and epic cocktail selection for a truly refreshing interval experience, this is one venue in St Andrews where we should all be heading this month. First and final year students alike: don’t allow the Byre to be one of the places you always wished you’d gone to before graduation, but never got the chance. Go and experience it for yourselves!
