Rachel Abreu, another one of our new writers for the Creative Writing section, sent us her poem Yesterday. Short but powerful, Rachel’s poem captures a moment in time which induces melancholic meditations upon a ‘friend.’

I poured my heart out

But my blood fell through

Like water through cracks between fingers,

And words fell out of my mouth

Faster than you could catch them,

So I thought that maybe

I could borrow your lips for a while

And pretend we were making history,

When really I wouldn’t remember

The next minute

And the next week I would

Have to pretend all over again,

That the only label I gave you was ‘friend’.
