Claire Robertson previews the Freshers’ Week lineup.

Freshers’ Week 2015, organized by our very own Student Union, sees the opening of the brand new Club 601 and nine nights of fantastic events. From St Andrews favourites like Sinners, Clan Warfare and a ceilidh, to Azeem Ward’s first UK performance and Union J, this year’s Freshers’ Week will be varied and exciting.

THE BUBBLE (Saturday 5th) Golden Ticket/£8.50

Freshers’ Week at the Students’ Association will begin with the eagerly anticipated launch of the Union’s new nightclub, Club 601. With a brand new venue, 1000 freshers, UV cannons, bubble machines and great music, it promises to be a brilliant welcome to The Bubble.

Clan Warfare (Sunday 6th) £7. Sold out, but extra tickets will be available from halls.

At this annual event, each hall will prove who is the is best by competing with one another in a series of challenges. Will reigning champions McIntosh Hall defend their title, or will another hall win the prizes up for grabs? Wear your hall colours and get ready for a fun evening of friendly rivalry and competition.

Fickle Friends – 601 Live (Monday 7th) Golden Ticket/ £10.50

This show will feature Brighton indie-pop five-piece Fickle Friends, rock band The Carnabys, and St Andrews’ hugely talented a cappella groups at Club 601. Check out Fickle Friends’ latest catchy single “Could be Wrong” here.

Jedward, supported by Azeem Ward and Underbelly (Tuesday 8th ) Golden Ticket/£11.50

Irish twins Jedward, who first found fame on the sixth series of The X Factor back in 2009, are a fun and energetic addition to this year’s Freshers’ Week line-up. After classic performances of songs such as Vanilla Ice’s “Under Pressure (Ice Ice Baby)” and “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr. on The X Factor, they have gone on to release three albums and present television shows. Supporting Jedward will be internet sensation Azeem Ward with his first live performance in the United Kingdom. After thousands of people ‘attended’ his Senior Flute Recital on Facebook, meant to be a small event for family and friends, 50,000 people in the UK watched his performance streamed live on the internet. Make sure you buy tickets for this unique event!

Ceilidh (Wednesday 9th) £7.50

The ceilidh will be a brilliant way to take part in one of Scotland’s best traditions, make new friends, and dance to a talented live band. Don’t worry if you’ve never been to a ceilidh before: the dances are fun and simple to learn, and all of the steps will be explained clearly.

Sinners (Wednesday 9th) £7.50

After the Give-it-a-Go day, make sure you head over to Sinners in the evening. Every week, the Athletic Union takes over the Students’ Association for a sports-themed evening at Club 601. Don’t miss out on this St Andrews staple.

Union J (Thursday 10th) Golden Ticket/£12.50

Go and see Union J at Club 601 as they start their Scottish Freshers’ Week tour. Josh, JJ, Jaymi and George finished fourth on the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012 before releasing a self- titled album in 2013 and You Got it All last year. They are currently making their third album.

P.U.L.L. (Friday 11th) Golden Ticket/£7.50

This will be the launch of Club 601’s new weekly Friday night event featuring St Andrews-based DJ Alasdair Todd: a perfect way to celebrate your first Friday night in The Bubble.

SUB 601 (Saturday 12th) Golden Ticket/£7.50

The Union, Sitara and Lightbox Creative will collaborate for the launch of SUB 601. With music from DJ SAUNIT, Subtronics and TV noise, this is a not-to-be-missed event.

This is St Andrews (Sunday 13th) £5.50

The night before classes start, why not spend the evening at the Union watching talented students perform comedy, theatre and music? This will be a great end to a busy and exciting Freshers’ week. Get tickets to either the early show or the late show.
