The traditional St Andrews experience may seem incomplete to some without the addition of one or more of the most exclusive and entertaining events one could add to a personal calendar: a ball. Criticised by some as perhaps too exclusive, lauded by some for perhaps the same reason, the fact of the matter is that St Andrews is invariably tied to its many balls.
Opening Ball is the first ball of the academic year and is open to all students. This year’s offering will maintain many of the traditional elements returning students have come to associate with the event, with a few new twists and updates that will hopefully keep the ball feeling fresh, interesting, and well worth the ticket price. Guests will be welcomed by a champagne reception and Highland pipers, a slower start to what presents itself to be a highly varied and entertaining evening.
Other musical acts will feature some of the diverse talent offered in the St Andrews and wider community, from a jazz band to BPM Collective, to Ryzy (a newer artist sought out by this year’s committee), and a (momentarily) secret, new act to be revealed during the evening…
It’s clear that this year’s ball will have several options of food and drink, offering local favourite gelateria Jannetta’s, popcorn and cotton candy for fun, lighter bites, and pizza by Edinburgh company Wildfire, which has featured in several recent St Andrews events and is undoubtedly back by popular demand. Crepes from sweet to savoury are also available from La Creperie to add a more trendy, potentially less messy touch.
Potential guests should know that the dress code is black tie, and the event promises to be a great blend of traditional and elegant with some modern, youthful touches. Tickets tend to go quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Opening Ball takes place 6 October 2018, 8pm to 2am. All images featured in this article are from previous Opening Balls, provided by the Opening Ball Committee.
