Sonia Rykiel “Pour H&M”
By Heather Vice
After bringing shoe-god Christian Louboutin's creation within the reach of smaller budgets only last month, the fashion giant H&M prepares for its next guest designer collaboration. In time for the festive season, the iconic French multitalented designer Sonia Rykiel launches a dessous collection which showcased in Paris this week. The fantasy-world show set-up had all the big names in fashion, including Jean-Paul Gaultier, gasping in childlike wonderment and thrill. Pink lipsticked lips smiled on glittering, brightly coloured band wagons on which groups of girls - with big hair but otherwise scantly clad - struck their poses. An overwhelmingly vibrant spectacle, Sonia Rykiel's dessous collection entered the fashion scene with a bang, and is likely to crowd H&M stores when it becomes available to the public this weekend.
Sonia Rykiel, who opened her first boutique on the French capital's Rive Gauche in 1968, has been celebrated as a liberator of women's fashion. She invented the "démode", a type of anti-fashion which focused on comfort for the wearer. Stripping off unnecessary detail, she invented inside-out stitching and liked to leave pieces un-hemmed and unlined.
The spirit of Sonia Rykiel is apparent all over her collection "pour H&M", which is made from soft fabrics in uniform, feminine colours.
