We Love… Jermyn Street, London
By Henry Rex.

If you are looking for something a bit special for a loved one this Christmas, look no further than London’s Jermyn Street. 500 miles away it may be, but with the wonder that is online shopping, distance is no obstacle.

World renowned as the centre for gentlemen’s fashion, the Jermyn Street of today finds its reputation in a historical tradition dating back to 1664, when the aristocracy at The Court of St James’s were accustomed to be outfitted with all the necessities of a refined gentleman.

Unaffected by “fast fashion”, Jermyn Street holds true to the traditional and timeless creed of a world without catwalk shock therapy. A world in which style is about the familiarity of understated classics, as opposed to the ostentatious “look at me” approach of today. Friend of the Prince Regent and 19th century dandy, Beau Brummell established the mode of men wearing beautifully cut suits. Embodying the spirit of Jermyn Street, his commemorative statue presides over the entrance to Piccadilly Arcade bearing a plaque which reads: “To be truly elegant, one should not be noticed.”

Offering bespoke shirt makers, tailors, boot makers, hatters, and even exquisite ladies’ fashion, Jermyn Street is punctuated by other shops selling fine wines and cheese, jewellery, cigars and other luxuries synonymous with English style.

Foremost among the shirt makers are Turnbull & Asser. Having served successive Princes of Wales, Sir Winston Churchill and even the likes of fictional characters such as James Bond, Turnbull & Asser are world renowned for their classic style and personal service.

Also on Jermyn Street can be found shoe and boot makers such as John Lobb, a family-owned business since 1849. Here, footwear is handmade and is unique to its owner, with every consideration taken, right down to the measurements and features of individual toes.

The street also caters to the tastes of the more trendy through the rather more familiar names of T.M. Lewin and Thomas Pink. Pink, a fairly late addition to the myriad of shirt makers that is Jermyn Street, although keeping alive the same traditional values of English tailoring, seeks to take the gentleman’s shirt to a wider, youthful and more current clientele with its array of striking patterns and colours. Although more modern, Pink shirts are nonetheless of a quality necessary for survival in Jermyn Street.

Just as Saville Row is synonymous with the finest suits, so Jermyn Street with the finest shirts. The shirt makers’ Mecca, it surely is the only place this Christmas if shopping for a gentleman friend.
