Ellie Micklethwait

Your kitchen may already be a shrine to Nigella. You may have every Delia available. But for those who are slightly less keen, yet starting to tire slightly of ready-meals and takeaways, then this list of kitchen essentials might be quite useful.

Equipment:

•Saucepan

•Frying Pan (preferably non-stick)

•Sharp Knife

•Wooden Spoon

•Chopping Board

•A large Wok (if you want to splash out a bit…)

Cupboard Basics

Carbs – to fill you up:

•Potatoes

•Pasta

•Rice (Basmati, long grain and Arborio rice – for risotto)

•Bread

•Cous Cous

Vegetables – to keep you healthy:

•Tinned tomatoes

•Carrots (v. cheap!)

•Onions

•Frozen vegetables (peas, beans etc are perfect)

•Mushrooms (high in fiber and very useful to bulk things up)

Protein – to make you strong:

•Chicken (2 fillets for £2 in Tesco’s at the moment)

•Minced meat (perfect for Bolognese, chili con carne and shepherds pie – 2 kg for £6 at Tesco’s which will last you a while if you freeze it)

•Baked Beans (£1 for four at Morrison’s)

•Pulses (for all those vegetarians; both dried and tinned)

•Eggs

Spices – to make your food tastier:

•Garlic

•Salt and Pepper
