United We Stand

“I am all for anarchy”, was what struck me when I first thought about politics. I must say that even now, I remain all for civil liberties – but you do have to draw the line somewhere! I also asked myself: what is the most important thing in the world? I found the obvious answer was people. Then it occurred to me: what is the Labour Party all about? That would be people. Therefore, when it comes to politics, logically speaking, if you care about people why support any other party? The truth is that no other political party’s constitution is quite so dedicated to the benefit of fellow human beings (see good ol’ Clause IV).

Just look at ants. Ants can be the strongest, most sophisticated creatures in the world. They work together to tackle problems far larger than their individual selves. Indeed many animals, including humans, are simply stronger together. This is not an opinion; this is a basic fact. Think about it - more people working together equals more brains on the job, more ways of looking at things, a greater adaptability, more experience, a greater diversity of knowledge, and so on. This is why the biggest, fiercest bear on the planet is nothing compared to a million fire ants. The ants would irrefutably win every time, without a shadow of a doubt.

The boredom factor also used to strike me when thinking about politics. The common conception is of men in suits, delivering mind-numbingly boring, monotonous speeches in parliament. A sea of grey hair and wrinkles. However, if you actually listen to what is being said you soon realise this stuff actually affects millions of people – including you and me. I know some people think politicians are only in it for themselves, with a few shameful examples doing little to dispute this cynical view. Nevertheless, politicians across the
nations, working collectively, can quite literally change the world. And it is no exaggeration to say that so can you. Politics affects the law, and the law affects us all. A proper government, if legitimately elected, can compel people to behave ethically and embrace the common good through the law.

The future is progressive. The future is about reform, change, and making things better. Change is an integral part of life: just as humans change and evolve, so does society. It is therefore fundamental that the policies governing this ever-changing society grow and adapt alongside man. This is quite simply why progressivism is the way forward.

Activism in the Labour Party, if you are talented, can provide you with an unparalleled opportunity to bring about real change in life. It can offer you the chance to do the greatest good for the greatest amount of people. A career in politics can enable you to reach out to billions. No other career offers quite such exponential scope for you to make a tangible difference in the world. If you want to achieve your full potential to help the world, Labour may be the answer…
