Wednesday 21st October sees the first annual One Water Charity Golf Day on the Eden golf course. Organised by students of the university’s One Water Society, its aim is to raise further awareness of and money for the One Foundation; dedicated to funding projects to provide water, HIV/AIDS assistance and nutrition projects throughout Africa. Over the past few years the society has held several very successful events including the Swim for Africa which raised well over £1000 for the cause.
St Andrews, as the home of golf, is the ideal setting for the event. St Andrews is a town that fully embraces its position as the birthplace of golf. At every turn students, locals and tourists alike can find golf shops, golf themed pubs, numerous golf courses and of course situated in the town is the home of the R&A; the rule makers of the game. It is also home to many other golfing events including the British Open every five years, the next being 2010, and also the annual Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. A part of the European tour, this Pro-Am event also donates a great deal to charity.
The One Water Charity Golf Day is set to be an enjoyable one for all participants; eighteen holes of golf on the charismatic Eden course, followed by dinner and prize giving in the beautiful Eden Clubhouse. Taking its name from the Eden estuary along which the course runs, it came into existence as a result of heavy pressure on the Old, New and Jubilee. The course offers great character to those that play it but with less of the difficulty associated with the three other courses.
Duncan Goose, the founder of Global Ethics (the company behind One Water), is set to make an appearance on the day. The 2007 Greatest Briton will be meeting with the competitors; thanking them for their participation and informing everyone about what Global Ethics is and does. Recipient of the ‘Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year’, ‘European Entrepreneur of the Year’ and ‘Ruban d’Honneur’ award Duncan Goose is one of the most charitable people around. His commitment to his company and to the plight of those he helps around the world is commendable.
Sporting competitions have been used all over the world in order to raise awareness and money for charities. The GyroHSR Great British Bike Relay is an example of one well known charity event, which raises money for SportsAid. Another is The Virgin London Marathon, a World Marathon Major, which is unusual in terms of its charitable nature. It raises far more than any other marathon and is the largest annual fund raising event in the world according to its organisers.
Anybody who is interested in the golf day can find out more information through their website www.charitygolfday.tk. Spaces are limited and almost gone but contact the society via onewatersociety@st-andrews.ac.uk to enquire about taking part.
