Gilbert and Sullivan is certainly not one of my favourite genres of theatre,it was, therefore, with a strong sense of trepidation that I entered the Royal College of Surgeons to watch diretor Ella Ormerod’s revival production of ‘The Mikado’. The show was incredibly sucessful during its first run in St.Andrews, during March of this year, however it is always interesting to see whether a
production that works in St.Andrews, will translate to an audience at the Fringe.

Within seconds of entering the auditorium my fears were cast aside. The simple, yet stylish, tricolour of red, black and white, used in the highly practical set design, immediately drew us into the world of Titipu. The actors, garbed in a blend of cool but quirky costume, with imaginative Japanese flourishes, were musically exellent and their commitment to the show was infectious.

Rachel Middle's charming portrayal of Yum-Yum was well matched by her suitor Nanki Poo played by Colm O Siochru. Praise must also be given to the deliciously comic Graham Richardson and Emma Rettie's compelling performance of Katisha. However it was the sheer vitality of the chorus that really made this show a joy to watch. Gilbert and Sullivan at its best.
