On The Rocks is the largest student-run arts festival in Scotland, incorporating art, photography, film, theatre, dance, music and comedy. It began in April 2009 and is now back for its fifth year in 2013. In what began as an initiative to combine the annual film and theatre festivals into one big event, it is now a huge production that hosts over 40 events annually, the majority of which are sell-out performances. It has also attracted the attention of several influential actors and actresses, with Sean Connery, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Joanna Lumley and Simon Pegg signing up as festival patrons. Last year it became entirely student-run after the departure of the previous Barron theatre administrator, Julie Amphlett, who provided much of the initial guidance for the event. Last year’s festival was a huge success, and hosted events including the Sitara fashion show, a screening of the award-winning ‘Ebony Road’ by Maia Krall Fry, and a performance of Macbeth at the St. Andrews Castle, which was later brought to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival over the summer. This year’s festival will be taking place from 6th-14th April 2013. We will be having our box office at a space located on Bell Street. We have also collaborated with Lightbox who will be the official event photographers this year, so we hope this will help to raise awareness of the festival throughout the student body. We have an exciting lineup of events, including several theatre events such as ‘The Sugar Syndrome’ by Lucy Prebble, an award winning drama; ‘Just as it is’ by Alice Shearon, a student written comedy, and ‘Bitter Root’ by Joanna Alpern, a student written drama. Other events range from a Blind Mirth Sketch Show, The St. Andrews Revue (sketch comedy), an A Cappella concert, an open mic night, a Fine Food Photography workshop, and Sitara the fashion show to name just a few.We are also recruiting student volunteers for the festival, which is a great way to get involved with the show and gain experience in the arts. Applications open this Wednesday, the 20th of February, and close Wednesday the 6th of March. Volunteers can apply online at www.ontherocksfestival.com. We are recruiting volunteers for a wide range of roles including ushers, box office staff and general assistants. Any questions regarding volunteering can be directed to Kathryn Cherkas, our volunteer coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org or for more information visit the on the rocks website or Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ontherocksfestival.
